Also Profiled in Star Ledger Article
APRIL 28, 2000, ROSELAND, NJ. On April 28, 2000, Karen M. Cassidy was sworn in as a Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey. Cassidy had been a lawyer with Connell Foley for fifteen years before resigning to assume her judgeship.
Judge Cassidy is a graduate of American University and the National Law Center at George Washington University. In 1992, she was designated by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Certified Civil Trial Attorney; she was re-certified in 1999.
Assignment Judge Edward J. Beglin, Jr. presided at Cassidy's investiture ceremony, which was held in Courtroom No. 1 in the Union County Courthouse in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Numerous other jurists were also present, along with State Senate President Donald T. DiFrancesco, over three hundred members of the bar, and Judge Cassidy's family and friends. Connell Foley partners George W. Connell and Richard J. Badolato spoke at the investiture. Mr. Badolato's comments are available.
Upon graduation from law school, Judge Cassidy served as a law clerk to Judge Beglin, working in the very courtroom in which she was sworn in as Superior Court Judge fifteen years later. She joined Connell Foley in 1985 and became a partner in 1992. At the firm, Judge Cassidy handled a broad spectrum of litigation matters and was a member of the firm's Litigation, Insurance Law, and Product Liability Law sections. One of the highlights of her career was her defense of a curtain maker and a wall covering manufacturer in the DuPont Plaza Fire litigation, a massive case arising out of a hotel fire in Puerto Rico which killed over one hundred people.
In her remarks, Judge Cassidy credited another former Connell Foley partner and now federal bankruptcy judge, Hon. Raymond T. Lyons, as having first encouraged her to pursue a judicial appointment.
In addition to Judges Cassidy and Lyons, Connell Foley's lineage of judicial appointments include: Robert Shaw, to the United States Federal District Court; Jack Gascoyne and William T. McElroy, to the Superior Court of New Jersey; and Richard J. Hughes, as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey.
A recent Star Ledger article recounts Judge Cassidy's first day as a Superior Court Judge in Union County.
