FIRM GREW AT THE FASTEST RATE IN 1995

In an April 22, 1996 article titled "Attrition Increases at Largest New Jersey Firms," the New Jersey Law Journal concluded that Connell, Foley & Geiser's 1995 growth rate of 9.7% in the number of attorneys bucked the state-wide trend toward downsizing among State's largest firms. The article, by Tim O'Brien, reported the results of the Law Journal's survey of the largest firms in New Jersey and concluded that in 1995 "[l]arge firms continue to downsize [and] mid-sized firms continue to grown modestly." "Overall," the Law Journal wrote, "the contraction of firms that started in the 1990s goes on."

About Connell Foley LLP's 1995 results, the Law Journal wrote:

"Connell, Foley Up;
Robinson, St. John Down"
"At Connell, Foley, the firm that grew the most during the survey period, name partner Theodore Geiser says the firm practices what he calls 'controlled growth.' It adds laterals when necessary, but grows by hiring new associates, not through mergers or by picking up practice groups. There is little attrition."

"'In the last five years, primarily in the metropolitan areas, the large firms have become unstable,' says Geiser, citing the demise of New York giants Shea & Gould and Mudge Rose, Guthrie, Alexander & Ferdon, and the Newark firm of Clapp & Eisenberg. Connell, Foley was a firm that did not rush to grow in the 1980s, and did not opens branches or move into a range of new practice areas."

"Geiser says the firm has 83 attorneys today. With the addition of two lateral hires and a first-year associate class of six expected this fall, the firm could be close by 90 attorneys by the end of the year, he says." © New Jersey Law Journal
