Bernard Hartnett

Overview

Bernard M. Hartnett, Jr., Of Counsel to Connell Foley, is a graduate of St. Peter’s Prep and St. Peter’s College where he received his B.A. in 1951.  In 1955 he received his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law. 

Mr. Hartnett was admitted to the bar of the State of New York in 1956 and to the New Jersey bar in 1959. His initial experience as an attorney was with the National Labor Relations Board in their New York, Washington and Newark offices.

Following a year of private practice with the law firm of Joseph P. Dunn focusing on the representation of construction trade unions, he joined the law department of the Western Electric Company. In 1973 he became Western Electric’s Labor Counsel with nationwide responsibility for all labor personnel and benefit matters. In 1975 he was elected Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of New Jersey Bell, a position he held until his retirement in 1991.

Thereafter, he joined the law firm of Schiller, Squeo & Hartnett until 2001 when he was chosen to serve as the interim County Executive of Hudson County for a 13-month period.
