Michael Shadiack, Chair of Connell Foley's Labor and Employment Group, authored the article "NJ Family Leave Act: Practical Pointers for Small Employers" for the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA) on June 26, 2019.

The article examines the New Jersey Family Leave Act (FLA), which until now applied to New Jersey businesses with 50 or more employees, as well as all state and local government agencies, regardless of size. However, as a result of an amendment signed by Gov. Phil Murphy earlier this year, beginning June 30 the FLA will now also apply to New Jersey businesses with between 30 and 50 employees anywhere in the world.

Mike's article examines not just the FLA, which provides job-protected unpaid leave to an eligible employee for up to 12 weeks to care for a family member, but also additional federal and state statutes that provide leave time to New Jersey workers. He also provides other practical pointers for the small and mid-sized employer to manage employee leaves of absence.

In a related article, Mike was featured by the NJBIA in an article titled "Smaller Businesses to Comply with Family Leave Act Starting Sunday," published on June 25, 2019. The article likewise offers insight to the upcoming change to the FLA that will be enforced beginning Sunday, June 30, 2019.
